Sales of Garden, Patio, BBQ, or Backyard Products continue to boom
By Fusion Team
In March, Canadians begin to emerge from their winter slumber and to focus their attention on the outside of their houses, getting gardens and the patios ready for summer.
Omni-channel sales in the patio and garden categories to the end of March grew by nearly 70%*. In effect, if a retailer’s sales grew by less than that they will have lost market share.
The year over year sales increase in March was driven by three key factors:
Although unemployment has grown it has been more than made up for by increased wages and a lower cost of living in March this year thus giving Canadians more spending power
More people moved this March compared to last year when property purchases declined dramatically due to COVID public health measures; moving house is a major driver of household purchases
The repeated lockdowns and travel bans imposed over the last year have limited spending focus to homes retail categories.
Through April and May, Fusion’s forecast is for the outdoor category to continue its strong growth as economic factors improve; housing markets continue to stay hot; and governments only gradually begin to lift restrictions on other activities.
